Student visas in Italy are issued by Italian Embassies or Consulate-General offices in your country of origin.

Students from European Union (EU) or EFTA countries can enter Italy with a valid passport or EU ID card and can remain in Italy without a visa for the duration of their studies. Upon arrival, however, EU students must register at their local Questura station (police station) if their study program is longer than 3 months, in order to obtain a residence permit.

Visas for Non-EU Students

While EU/EEA students can study in Italy without a visa, other international students aren't so lucky. Still, the visa application process becomes less complicated when you have all the necessary information.

Depending on how long you plan to stay in Italy and what you will study, you need to apply for one of the following visa types:

Short-stay visa (type C) – if you apply for a language or a short course that lasts less than 90 days
Long-stay visa (type D) – if you apply for any degree course that has at least 20 hours of courses per week (or 80 hours per month) and lasts more than 90 days

Conditions you have to meet to apply for a visa in Italy

You must have a valid passport with at least two blank visa pages
You must provide a copy of your flight itinerary
You must not have a criminal record
You must not have been denied entry in Italy previously

Required Documents

Students may need to present any or all the following documents as part of their application for a student visa to study in Italy:

A valid passport, with at least two blank visa pages and valid for at least three months after the expected end date of your study program.
A letter of acceptance from your institution in Italy.
A completed visa application form.
A copy of your itinerary to and from Italy.
Proof of no criminal record.
Proof of language proficiency in Italian or English (depending on the language of your study program).
Proof of adequate financial means to support yourself (between €450 and €515 monthly);.
Proof of adequate accommodation in Italy.
Proof of adequate medical insurance.
Proof you’ve paid the associated application fee.

Working as a student in Italy

You can usually work up to 20 hours a week with a student residence permit in Italy. However, your employer will need to organize a work permit for you, which may take up to two months to process.
